Citrix XenApp (formerly Presentation Server) is the number one application virtualization solution for providing any user with secure access to client/server applications from anywhere using any device or connection. XenApp enables IT centrally to deploy and manage line of business applications while providing secure, on-demand access to these resources, and delivering the lowest total cost of ownership (TCO), highest security, and best performance and scalability.
Citrix XenApp extends the base Windows Terminal Services platform by enhancing the end-user experience as well as increasing manageability, compatibility, security and scalability to address business-critical environments. XenApp expands the range of supported applications to include legacy software and Web-based, UNIX and Java solutions. It also enables any device or operating system – including Macintosh and Linux – to access virtualized applications. Other important capabilities are powerful management and configuration tools and faster, more flexible printing. With the release of XenApp's Citrix System have further enhanced their flag-ship application delivery platform.
The flexibility of Citrix XenApp provides organisations with a powerful platform on which to help manage their business. Cetus have helped hundreds of organisations to leverage the benefits of XenApp in areas such as:
By housing the Citrix XenApp servers in secure data centres (be it at the client’s own, or at one of Cetus’ hosting partners), a rapid re-deployment of key personnel can be conducted in the event of a loss of main business premises. By providing secure access to the data centre with Citrix Access Gateway; organisations can ensure that only those users entitled to access their data, do so.
Organisations experiencing rapid growth (often through acquisitions and mergers) need to be able rapidly to provide new, or incorporate existing, offices into their IT infrastructure. By implementing a centralised Citrix XenApp based IT solution; organisations need only direct new employees to their secure web portal in order to provide them with access to their applications.
Remote access, be it on the move or from home, provides a powerful way for organisations to extend the reach of their IT systems. Citrix XenApp provides the back bone of a secure remote access strategy.
See Mobile Computing for further information.
When users connect to and use applications running on a XenApp Server, the only data that travels between the client device (PC, thin-client, handheld) and the server are screen, keyboard and mouse data. Where appropriate, administrators can allow file transfers and printing to the client. Should a client device fail, no data will be lost. Should the device be lost or stolen, no data will be found on the device itself.
Access to the centralised data can be protected by standard authentication methods, or further enhanced using policy based access, such as provided by Citrix Advanced Access Control (AAC). Using AAC, a standardised portal can be presented to all users (local and remote), with the available services being tailored based upon their user name, device type, and location.
Remote users can access the data using Citrix XenApp’s in-built web interface (Citrix Secure Gateway), or via the Citrix Access Gateway; Citrix’s market leading SSL/VPN appliance.
Citrix XenApp sits at the heart of a well planned thin-client deployment. Thin-client devices deliver application functionality without the need for expensive client hardware. This can reduce the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of an organisation’s IT infrastructure by simplifying client device management, reducing power consumption and reducing support costs.
